Situated west of Russia, at the base of the Scandinavian Peninsula there is small country called Finland. It is the land where summers are hot and winters are very cold. It is the land known by it’s nature and technology. People of Finland are taciturn and inventive. In the middle of this land, surrounded by the lakes, stands the city of Jyväskylä. The City landscape is dominated by the great esker brought up by the ice age. The slope of this ridge is also part of the city. Wind soughs the pines and where the forest ends there stands old red brick building. It is a building with a long history; it has been a bakery and even an early atomic physics research institute. Nowadays this thick masonry holds the premises of Penaudio. Maserati brand sport car is parked in front of building. Inside one can hear beautiful female voice projecting from the listening studio. A man is listening it with thoughtful look on his face. The Golden ears of Penaudio, mister Sami Penttilä himself, is at work.
All the Penttilä family are musical. From the very start Sami sung and played instruments like his siblings did. However what Sami enjoyed mostly was listening to music. As a young boy Sami learned to respect the natural sound. In his youth when he got his first salary from summer job, he decided to find proper speakers. To his surprise he could not find good enough speakers.
“I heard flaws in every speaker. The sound did not flow properly; High sounds did not sparkle right way and low sounds were full of artificial energy. The real, deep sound I was looking for was missing. So I decided to make myself a pair of perfect speakers.”
Mister Penttilä was self taught in construction of speakers for they were single most important component in audio reproduction. He knew the anatomy of the sound. Inherited love for the natural sound has kept Sami studying all about audio. So this young man acquired the best components possible and created the first pair of speakers. This very first experiment sounded better than anything he had heard in the stores. These speakers were original and they sounded perfectly natural. When Sami listened to them he realized he had just created something unique. The concept of Penaudio was born.
Sound is subjective. It cannot be unambiguously said whether the reproduced sound is good or bad. It all depends on the person listening to it, the surroundings and purpose of the sound. When speaking of high fidelity the actual quality of audio gains great meaning. Purity of sound is the essence of this quality. However even the highest purity does not necessarily mean that the heard sound is natural. Penaudio is intented for those who love both: pure and natural sound.
The speakers of Penaudio represent blend of long traditions of Nordic carpentry and the latest techniques in the working of wood. In them one can hear the sound of the northern nature. The touch of fine woodworker mister Petri Polso can be seen in the finishing of the speakers. Handmade and veneered speaker cabinets are a great display of woodwork mastery. Unlike many modern devices speakers last practically forever. Therefore cabinet must also be long lasting both in physical and aesthetic way.
Founder of Penaudio, mister Sami Penttilä, has always greatly appreciated the quality, originality and naturalness.
“I want people to choose Penaudio not for its brand but for its quality. After that Penaudio means quality to them.”
In every speaker of Penaudio there is small fragment of the northern nature’s spirit. Although every speaker is delicately designed, manufactured and tested instrument it still maintains the originality one can find in nature. It is the same strong spirit that has been inspiration for Finnish painters, composers and other creative souls throughout the centuries. It is part of this day’s Finnish tradition one can touch and hear. It is something unique, something unexplainable.
